Note

Southern maintained a separate corporate identity for a number of subsidiary roads, among them the Alabama Great Southern, Cincinnati New Orleans & Texas Pacific, Georgia Southern & Florida, and many more. A separate numbering scheme was maintained until the 1973 general renumbering.

Diesel locomotives were painted in Southern colors but the subsidiary roads often had their lettering on the side of the hood. By the time the SW7’s were purchased, this practice was limited to small initials under the road number on the side of the cab.

This practice continued well into the Norfolk Southern era.
