Phases

The SW7 was EMD’s first 1200 horsepower switcher, the successor to the 1000 horsepower NW2, with a two month overlap in production between October and December, 1949. It was a transitional model that introduced the full height radiator with a single 54-inch fan instead of two 34 inch fans on the NW2. It used the same non-turbocharged 12-cylinder 567A engine and the same D15A generator and D27B traction motors.

As on the NW2, handrails remained mounted above the door line, the front cab windows were still arched, and the bell mounting remained the old cast type dating back to Winton powered switchers. Even the single-beam headlight remained the same.

  • Phase I – October, 1949, to March, 1950 – The front cab windows are arched, and the top of the radiator is covered by a series of louvers
  • Phase II – April, 1950, to January, 1951 – The front cab windows are straight across, and the top of the radiator is now protected by an open wire grill.
