Renumberings

  • 1959 General Renumbering: Four units – MILW 1616, 1617, 1622 and 1623 – had been equipped with MU in the early 1950’s for a specific operation together over the lightweight steel bridges between La Crescent and Ramsey, Minnesota. These units were gathered together as MILW 950-953, and three more units, MILW 1618, 1619 and 1627, equipped with shunts, were renumbered MILW 955-957. The rest of the SW1’s were renumbered 960-977. MILW 954 and 958-959 were left unassigned.
  • January, 1960 Renumbering: MILW 960 was equipped with MU and renumbered MILW 954.
  • March through May, 1972 Renumbering: As more GP9’s were rebuilt into “GP20’s”, MILW 965 and 968-977 were renumbered to MILW 958-960.
  • December, 1972 Renumbering: As even more GP20’s were created, the entire SW1 fleet was renumbered MILW 860-881, with the five MU equipped units assigned to the lowest numbers.
