Rebuild Programs

Rock Island essentially traded in all of their SW’s to EMD in 1857-1959. Officially, the accounting records showed a specific unit being rebuilt as another specific unit, but in reality this was nothing more than a trade in program. The SW900M’s used the original General Electric generators and were limited to 600 horsepower. The SW900’s used new EMD generators and were rated at 900 horsepower.

RI SW900m 560 was wrecked and rebuilt a second time, as an SW900, in 1968. SW900 901 was re-engined with a 12-cylinder EMD 567B in 1971 and was re-rated as 1200 horsepower.

All of the rebuilt units outlasted the railroad and were still operating at the 1980 shut down.
