Rebuilding Program

Beginning in 1956, Rock Island’s Silvis, Illinois, shops repowered five of the Winton powered NW1’s with deturbocharged 900 horsepower Alco 244 engines left over from repowering Alco FA’s with EMD 567’s. Since an entirely new engine bed was used, over the top of the original, the hood was raised to nearly the top of the cab. All of this added about 20,000 lbs to the weight of the locomotive.

The remaining three units (RI 702-704) were retired and held for several years to be used as trade in value.
